Side note on your interesting New Jersy Nets story

    Leroy Ellis, along with
Fred Carter, was a great player on that infamous Phil. team (worst record of all time 9-73). It was an amazing turnaround for Leroy who, the year before (1971-1972) was a key player on the Lakers team who won the championship and set the record of 33 straight wins during the season.

FYI – Fred Carter recently said (on the Dan Patrick radio show) he hopes no team will break Philadelphia’s worst record ever as then he will be forgotten. Now, whenever someone threatens the record (e.g. New Jersy this year), he gets phone calls and invitations from around the country.

    PickGuru suggestion

Pick Guru should publish and sell a ‘Picking Winners’ book – could have separate ones for pro basketball, pro football, college football, and college basketball – perhaps sell for $10-15 each(shipping included) or a combined book for $30-40.

The casual fan would enjoy learning how odds are set, how oddsmakers think, how trends are established, and what factors (injuries, travel, past record, coaching) affect odds. Included in the books would be schedule of games with space for notes.

Gilbert Arenas Story – Wow!!! Brendan Heywood had more intelligent comments than Arenas – hard to explain Gilbert’s behavior after his good play last year.

Be interesting to see how many large contracts turned out to be busts – Benoit Benjamin and Elden Campbell come to mind.

Also amazing how some players turn down great offers – usually to their detriment – thinking of Latrell (“choke the coach”) Sprewell turning down a $27 million contract – never to play again.

Playground players often say – this is a ‘team’ game – there’s no “I” in team – true, but (as Arenas and others might say),there is an “me” in ‘team.’

Thought provoking story on the Captain – he’s absolutely on a very short list when talking about the best of all time.

When he won in 1971 with the Bucks was it during his rookie year? Other teams, as I remember, weren’t too pleased when he ended up in L.A.

Spike Lee was on Mychal Thompson’s radio show today promoting his new movie on Kobe – Mychal’s question to Spike and the other newsasters: “Assume you could take any player who ever played in the NBA at age 20, to start your team, who would you select:

    Mychal Thompson: Magic
    Spike Lee: Michael
    Announcer: Bill Russell
    2nd. Announcer: Oscar Robertson
    3rd. Announcer: Wilt

Amazing no one would select Kareem or Kobe?

Great article on the ‘vig’ – including the statistics involved – you’re right – very difficult for the bettor. Some of these principles apply to other industries, especially insurance.

Interestingly, both the insurance industry’s actuarial tables and gambling’s odds are based on the probability work of Pascal, a famous 19th century matematician, philosopher,, and gambler. The odds are always in favor of the house and are based on an infinite series of bets rather than the next one. The house (or the insurance company) pay off less than the true mathematical chance. For example, rolling two dice results in 36 rolls with six of them being a seven – but Vegas pays 5-1 rather than the mathematical 6-1, pocketing the difference.

Sports betting, perhaps combined with computer programming, trend analysis, and professional background work provided by such sites as pickguru.com should give bettors a much better chance than card or table games. Pickguru.com is doing a good job in helping bettors make better and more winning choices.

    Keep up the good work.

Clippers fans do get some enjoyment – as you noted in the big one yesterday over Celtics – remember another big game several years ago when Benoit (of all people) got upset over something the Lakers said about his (usual poor) play, came out and led the Clips to a big win. The pendulum may be swinging in the Clippers favor as good players now want to come here – assuming Blake Griffin gets healthy soon, they still have a good chance to do some damage. It might be poetic justice for Elton Brand who bolted after drafting his friend Baron Davis – haven’t heard much from Elton lately. Still hoping for a Lakers/Clippers match in the playoffs one of these years.

Suggestion – might be an idea to have the comments listed from recent to early – but great job on the site

p.s. notice Google now putting some ads on pickguru.com

Good comments on the NBA projected comments – Lakers win title again (if healthy)with Koby, as usual, being the driving force.

The question is not “Is Koby among the best players ever?” but rather, “What makes Koby different from other superstars?”

Jerry West had an intesting answer (in response to a question when Koby set the Lakers record for most points scored.
To paraphrase The Logo; “Koby is different from any other superstar I ever met in his approach to the last shot. Not only does Koby want the last shot, he also has a great gift of not worrying about it if he misses. Most great players vividly remember the shots they missed in key games – not Koby – he doesn’t dwell on it but looks forward to another opportunity.” Koby’s attitude plus his commitment to practicing and playing hard on every possession will be keys to another great Lakers season.
