NBA Sleepers
February 1, 2010
As we approach All-Star Weekend (the halfway point of the season), it seems Las Vegas and the public mirror their pre-season sentiments – The Lakers will beat either the Cavs or the Celtics for the title this year. The Lakers are expected to prevail in the West, with Denver, Dallas, and the Spurs being given a puncher’s chance. In the East, I only hear talk of Lebron’s Cavs, The Big 3 + Rasheed in Boston, the Orlando Magic starring Vinc-anity and Superman, and last year’s Hawks + Jamal Crawford. While I have a better chance to win Miss America than most of the remaining 22 teams have to win the championship, I believe the following teams will make the playoffs and could make some noise…
Western Conference
Oklahoma City Thunder – 9th in West
Only two words come to mind – Kevin Durant. This guy is an absolute animal on the offensive end, recording his 27th game of 30+ points this season in a win vs. Golden State. He has the “it” factor, that indescribable ability to get a score and give his team a chance to win every night. Ok City has a winning record at home and on the road, Russell Westbrook has played solid at point, showing continued success from his UCLA years, and their bench has been excellent (Collison, Harden, Eric Maynor, and Serge Ibaka). Durant has the ability to do what LeBron did in Cleveland and Dwayne did in Miami – win with “nobody”.
Memphis Grizzlies – 10th in West
Memphis has a talented core despite Old Man Iverson quitting on them earlier this year. Zach Randolph is easily the comeback player of the year, returning to old Portland-form putting up 25 points and 10 rebounds nightly. Rudy Gay is benefiting from not having to be the go-to guy every night, Mayo is proving worthy of being a #3 draft pick, and the other Gasol is a legit center. Their starting five is great, but having no bench loses 7 game series. It’s also tough to cheer for guys named Gay and Mayo.
Houston Rockets – 11th in West
The Rockets took the Lakers to 7 games last season in the playoffs. While Artest and Ariza switched teams, I’m not sure who got the better end of that deal. Artest’s defense is phenomenal, but Ariza never misses an open bucket and has a much calmer demeanor. Aaron Brooks?! Who knew this short kid from Oregon would be such a force (he’d be an all star starter if Houston was in the east). Shane Battier is a wrinkle-headed Bruce Bowen, and Landry/Lowry are key role players. Oh yeah, and all this without T Mac (this year’s highest paid player) and Yao, verifying Adelman = Coaching God.
Eastern Conference
Toronto Raptors – 5th in the East
There is one thing you can’t coach – height. The Lakers are a tough match mainly because they are so damn tall (Bynum, Pau, Lamar), and Toronto poses the same problem to opponents. Their GM is the guy that put together the Suns team that scored 200 points a night, and he has some great pieces in place – Hedu, Bosh, and Bargnani are a 3 headed, 21 foot tall offensive beast. Their backcourt is the obvious weakness, although Jarrett Jack has always been solid and Calderon is a highly underrated point guard (I don’t think he has ever missed a free throw). If Bosh isn’t traded, watch out for these guys, eh.
Charlotte Bobcats – 6th in the East
Larry Brown’s Bobcats have already won more games than teams he’s coached, and we’re barely halfway through the season. They made the biggest in-season acquisition to date, getting Steven Jackson’s 20 plus points a game for next-to-nothing. Jackson and Gerald Wallace, the NBA’s most unheralded all-star, give them an extraordinary one-two punch. Boris Diaw, Tyson Chandler, and Nazr Mohammed hold their own as the bigs, and Ray Felton/D.J. Augustin/Flip Murray function nicely as backcourt role players. Plus they have Nelly as a part owner/MVP of every celebrity basketball event.
Chicago Bulls – 7th in the East
After an extremely slow start, in which everyone thought their coach would be fired and the season was doomed, Chicago has been stellar. Led by Derrick Rose, who has been as advertised – a can’t miss #1 overall pick franchise point guard. Luol Deng is a great player, kind of like a healthy Elton Brand with more offensive range. Joakim Noah is tenacious, Tyrus Thomas is showing basketball talent to match his incredible athleticism, and Brad Miller, Heinrich, John Salmons, and Taj Gibson make up one of the deeper teams in the east. At their current pace, Del Negro could win Coach of the Year – talk about from the doghouse to the penthouse.
